Dear Erik,
It’s about time we got some good news!
Thanks to your efforts -- and those of the more than 49,000 other caring people who took the time to contact their Senators -- we’ve helped secure an important victory for polar bears and other imperiled wildlife. On behalf of all of us at Defenders, I especially want to thank the thousands of activists who personally called their Senators last week.
Last Thursday, the Senate rejected an attempt by Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski to strip language from the omnibus spending bill that would help restore vital protections for polar bears and hundreds of other species protected by the Endangered Species Act.
The Senate last night passed the omnibus bill -- including the provisions in the bill to reverse the Bush Administration’s assault on the Endangered Species Act that Senator Murkowski had sought to remove. President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law later today.
This victory would not have been possible without your efforts, and it underscores the important difference that we can make when we work together to protect our polar bears, wolves and other wildlife. We’ll have plenty of tough fights in the days ahead. But for the moment, please accept my sincere gratitude for helping us secure this important win for America’s vanishing polar bears and other imperiled species.

I am studying and writing about a very significant event. The book is about global mass extinctions and the danger which we all face as human beings on this planet today. Potential extinction.
This problem comes from many sources, but what is most important is the impact from shark and whale decline. This is due to the fact that sharks and whales eat tiny fish and crustaceans, which feed on algae and phytoplankton.
The oceans produce almost 70% of the worlds oxygen. It is responsible for absorbing over 80% of harmful carbon gas! If sharks and whales numbers drop low enough, their prey species will have a population explosion. It is these prey species that will eat up our lifeline, unchecked. Sharks are being killed at over 100 million a year! They cannot recover fast enough to keep from vanishing. Whales have never fully recovered from the days of global whaling! Some species are less than 10% of their natural numbers. Sharks worldwide are down by 90%! We need them to survive! Literally.
I urge the people of Japan to get involved to help protect all children and the existance of our species for the future.
Tell Prime Minister Fukuda that Japan will not sit by and allow him to support this ugly business.

Biography
Date of birth: November 10, 1953
Born in Lebanon, Mac Harb graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Science and an M.A. in Engineering. A former engineer for Northern Telecom and professor at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Mr. Harb's political career started at the municipal level in Ottawa in 1985 as an alderman, and then as Deputy Mayor from 1987 to 1988.
In 1988, Mr. Harb was elected to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre. Former Opposition Critic for Public Works, Urban Affairs and Housing, Mr. Harb sat on such committees as the Standing Committee on Multiculturalism and Citizenship, House Affairs, Public Accounts, and the Members Services Board. He also co-chaired the Liberal Task Force on Infrastructure in 1990.
Mr. Harb was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade from December 1993 until 1995.

I am writing this from the perspective of a 13 year old boy. Im an activist of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society one of the worlds most active organisations. I am also founder and manager of World Against Whaling Youth a site for kids against whaling. The conservation of sharks is so amazingly important and our lives and future depends on them. We must stop shark finning and purchasing shark items such as teeth, shak fin soup, and medication made from shark derived products.
Not only is the shark fin trade so inhumane with the sharks body's being thrown to the depths after its fins are sliced off but it is also really unsustainable with no only about 10% of the worlds old shark population remains. So help us and Save The sharks.

Hi my name is Jonathan. Im head of media and advertising for a group called WAWY (world against whaling youth). I love art, nature, but mostly, the oceans! My real passion tho, is sharks! I simply love them! Most people say and think that sharks are monsters, maneaters, and killing machines. Theyre not! 99.9% of shark attacks are cases of mistaken identity. And they are being rapidly killed off by longlinning. Its time that we stepped up to bat and said enough is enough! We have killed 99% of our worlds sharks! And the time has come, to say enough's, enough! We need to relise that were not just slaughtering the oceans, were killing ourselves! If we colapse one eco-system were gonna kill another then another. Its the domino effect people! Eventually its gonna kill off the human race! And if we dont relisse this now, were gonna hit a mass-extinction event! Its gonna hit us by the year 2049! Most people dont see this but, its true.. Im going to join Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, to help provent this. Dont get me wrong im not doing this for the human race, im doing it for the oceans. To me a whale is more important than anything else in the world, sharks, and seals. But im aiming towards sharks the most. Heres what longlinning is: 80-100 miles of net filled with baited hooks, and they only aim for a couple species, and when they catch other animals such as sea turtles, big fish ect ect. JAPAN has asked Australia to prevent the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin leaving port to harass its whalers in the Antarctic next summer, but the plea may have little effect.
The anti-whaling activists plan to upgrade their fleet from an ageing, former North Atlantic fisheries patrol boat to include another ship - something out of the future. The global speedboat Earthrace would head south under Sea Shepherd colours next summer, the group's leader Paul Watson said."It looks like a spaceship. It can do 40 knots and dive under waves completely. We'll be using it to intercept and block harpoons."
In 61 days last year Earthrace circled the globe fuelled by biodiesel. The New Zealand owner/skipper, Pete Bethune, said he decided to become involved because "this is happening in my backyard and it really pisses me off. I'm going to make a stand."
He said he was adding half a tonne of Kevlar to the vessel to toughen it against the ice. It had the endurance to go half way round the world on a tank of fuel.
"They won't get away from me," he said.
Earthrace's role was unveiled as the International Whaling Commission heard that Sea Shepherd's protests endangered the lives of whalers in the Southern Ocean last summer when the Steve Irwin was involved in two collisions.
"These are highly dangerous, and it can only be described as a miracle that there has been no death or large-scale accident to date," said a Japanese delegation member, Jun Yamashita.
"We cannot tolerate such audacity," Mr Yamashita told the commission. "We ask for
all appropriate measures, including a ban on the ship from leaving port, so that we can prevent these acts from being repeated."
Mr Watson, who is not permitted inside the meeting, said the Steve Irwin was soon to leave Brisbane for Hobart after a $500,000 refit. Its buckled hull plates had been repaired, and it was fitted with a powerful water cannon on the bow to match the whalers'.
He dubbed next summer's campaign Operation Waltzing Matilda and has adopted a symbol with a kangaroo wearing a pirate's eye patch.
An official from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, David Dutton, told the 71-nation meeting in Madeira that the Rudd Government was deeply concerned about clashes in the Southern Ocean.
Australian Federal Police were conducting an official investigation, so no further comment could be made because it was possible the case would come before a court, he said.
Mr Watson said the federal police had returned videotapes taken from the ship in a raid in Hobart in February but still held the ship's log book. He said he had not been contacted recently by the federal police or Dutch authorities, under whose flag Steve Irwin sails.
The Dutch Government said it had warned the group about being involved in dangerous activities.
"The Government of the Netherlands is now preparing measures that will be announced in the short term," said Dutch IWC commissioner, Marie-Josee Jenniskens.
New Zealand's commissioner, Sir Geoffrey Palmer, told the meeting: "I think it needs to be said that whaling in the Antarctic will continue to be a magnet for protest that will not go away."

I say former fishermen because they are no loger fishing! They are now
hunting mammals. Dolphins and small whales are herded by boats which clang metal pipes in the water to drive the confused animals into netted confines. Then to keep the animals from trying to escape, they use long flensing knives to slice into one of the dolphins. Having wounded the animal the rest of the pod remains there as dolphins will not abandon an injured member of their group. Then the Japanese slice them up repetatively until they bleed to death and are then gathered into the boats!

THE world's only factory whaling ship may be driven from the Antarctic by tighter regulations.
The Nisshin Maru is vital to the operations of the Japanese whaling fleet, but it will run foul of new rules imposed by the United Nations' International Maritime Organisation, an investigation by the Herald has found. The ship will fall foul of three new measures that will apply in Antarctic waters: the heavy fuel oil it uses will be banned; its hull-strength and safety will fail new requirements; and its annual dumping of thousands of tonnes of offal at sea will be rejected in the global nature reserve.
The regulations were backed by the Antarctic Treaty System after a series of accidents involving tourism cruise ships, including the sinking of the MS Explorer. They pose a dilemma for Japan, one of the world's largest and most law-abiding shipping nations, and threaten to make the operation of its heavily subsidised whaling fleet even more costly. The 22-year-old Nisshin Maru weighs 8000 tonnes. It is owned by Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha, a company in Tokyo that is owned by the government-funded Institute of Cetacean Research. The converted stern trawler processes and holds whale meat collected by Japan's "scientific research" program. Its chequered history includes two disabling ship fires and the deaths of three crew in accidents. Following the last fire in 2007, New Zealand's then conservation minister, Chris Carter, said he was concerned about the potential for the Nisshin Maru to spill 1000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil in the pristine Ross Sea.
The IMO's Marine Environmental Protection Committee met in London this week to approve a ban on the use of heavy fuel oil in the Antarctic Treaty area (below 60 degrees South) by July 2011, because of the harm it could cause. Exceptions will be made for ships involved in safety or search-and-rescue operations, the IMO said. Japanese records show all of its Antarctic whaling is done inside the treaty area. The IMO's Maritime Safety Committee also approved a new series of classes for ships operating in polar waters, and these are expected to be adopted at its general assembly this year. The Nisshin Maru might meet safety changes such as the introduction of compulsory enclosed lifeboats, but it will increasingly stand out from other polar vessels for its lack of ice strength and inferior hull construction. The ship has a single hull, not the double hull required today, and the safety group Lloyd's Register lists no ice-strengthening classification for it. Official cruise reports submitted to the International Whaling Commission by the Institute of Cetacean Research show the factory ship routinely steams through waters filled with icebergs and loose pack ice.
The IMO's Guidelines For Ships Operating In Ice-Covered Waters calls for them to use industry-best-practice rules against "operational discharges", strengthening Antarctic Treaty rules that forbid dumping waste at sea. Japan is one of the most compliant nations with IMO regulations, said John Francis, director of the Maritime Transport Policy Centre at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston. "Even though a growing percentage of Japanese ships are not operated under their flag, they still maintain very high standards," he said!

The shire of Broome called a special public meeting today to discuss the sister city relationship with Taiji.
Never before had the shire done this.
There had been calls in the press that Broome residents should not interfere with Taiji's slaughter because Australians would dismiss calls from the Japanese to stop culling kangaroos and that the Japanese don't come here telling us what to do.
In response to that, Director of The Cove, Louie Psihoyos stated that "the film is not just about the fact that they are killing dolphins - the people of Taiji and especially the mayor and his council are purposely and knowingly poisoning their own people as well. If kangaroos we're toxic and being served up to school children and unsuspecting consumers and their mercury laced organs put into fertilizer and pet food - then everyone in the world would be up in arms. But for the Japanese government to try to ignore the key issue demonstrates their lack of humanity towards man and animal. It's not about culture and tradition - it's about a crime against humanity when you know you are serving up poison."
The shire council had received thousands of emails and phone calls from Broome residents, the wider Australian community and abroad in support of suspending ties with Taiji in an effort to end the slaughter of 23,000 dolphins.
The result of the meeting was that the Broome shire has decided, that they can not fulfil their obligation as a sister town of Taiji whilst this barbaric practice continues.
This was a unanimous decision.
Broome is a hotspot for Dolphin and whale eco tours and would be willing to open the door to pass on knowledge to Taiji of how the Broome economy runs on this tourism aspect, providing the killing stops!
Councillor Peter Matsumoto, with close Taiji heritage, stood and spoke in support of Broome not being able to fulfil in its obligation as a sister city of Taiji.
Councillor Matsumoto brought himself to tears as he spoke about his heritage and the history of Broome with Taiji and the early pearling days.
However the emotion ran highest when Councillor Matsumoto spoke about the section in The Cove ,where there is a man talking about "children that are born with eyes that can not see and ears that can not hear".
Sea Shepherd would like to thank Una Baker, the residents of Broome and the Shire Council for taking the step in the right direction that may just see the end of this horrific and barbaric practice.

Broome Shire will sever a sister city relationship with a Japanese town that hosts the killing of more than 2000 dolphins a year after an emotion-charged special council meeting this afternoon.
More than 50 people, who packed the council chambers’ public gallery, greeted the decision with a standing ovation.
Broome Shire president Graeme Campbell said council’s unanimous decision was to “respectfully advise” the town of Taiji that Broome would be unable to fulfil its obligation as a sister town while the dolphin killings continued.
But he said the shire recognised the role Taiji played in developing Broome's pearling industry in the 19th century.
As part of a raft of council resolutions, councillors noted the national and international pressure placed on the shire to end the relationship.
The council also resolved to it would like to commit to developing alternative economic opportunities with the Japanese town.
Pressure had been mounting on the Shire of Broome to end the relationship with Taiji, where 26 dolphin hunters run a secretive operation to fill its government-sanctioned quota of 2300 dolphins.
Broome resident Una Baker, who attended today’s meeting, said she had been consumed by the horrific slaughters since watching the film, The Cove, which exposes the killings.
“It was very positive … what we wanted to achieve was achieved and it was awesome – everyone is very happy,” she told thewest.com.au.
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Australian director Jeff Hansen commended the chire and Broome residents for taking up the issue.
“May the original surfers stay safe and be free to ride a wave along side one of us soon,” Mr Hansen said.
Mr Campbell said the shire would notify Taiji of the decision as soon as possible.

Major US Shark Fin Trader Sentenced In Federal Court
Mark Leon Harrison of Southport, Florida had a bad day this week, but not bad enough considering the millions of sharks finned.* Harrison, according to NOAA Special Agent-in-Charge Hal Robbins, was once one of the United States’ largest commercial shark fin buyers.* Today, he is a convicted criminal in financial ruin.
Mark Leon Harrison was sentenced in federal court on August 19, 2009, as result of his having pleaded guilty on June 12 to three misdemeanor violations.* The sentence handed down by Judge Vineyard did not deviate from that outlined in the government’s plea agreement despite efforts by Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to see the sentence enhanced to include incarceration.
Harrison, owner and manager of Harrison International, LLC, of Southport, Florida, was engaged in the business of buying, acquiring, transporting, processing (including drying), selling, and exporting shark fins.
Mark Harrison and Harrison International pleaded guilty to attempting to export fins from sharks protected by Florida and/or federal laws and for dealing in shark fins, the landing of which had not been reported as required by law.
Harrison pleaded guilty to a third charge related to trading in shark fins that had been prepared, packed, or held under unsanitary conditions.* Harrison processed shark fins by drying them on open-air racks and/or tarpaulins laid on the ground, outdoors on his property in Southport, Florida.* The fins were left out at all times until dry. Dogs ran freely among the drying racks.* Investigators discovered fins being dried on Harrison’s property had, among other things, bird droppings and dead insects on them, and insect larvae in them.* Sea Shepherd Conservation Society knows this to be a common practice around the world.
Harrison was sentenced to 5 years probation, a $5000 fine, and a $75 special assessment.* Harrison will have to spend 120 days in home confinement and pay the cost of his monitoring.* He is forbidden to having anything to do with the shark fin trade, has to perform 150 hours of community service, and take out an advertisement in a major fishing trade publication regarding his criminal acts.* Harrison International, LLC was sentenced to 5 years probation, a $125 special assessment, and a $5000 fine.* His attorney represented in court that Harrison is now in financial ruin and that his only income is from a lawn care business he runs from his home.* Harrison International, LLC is defunct and has no assets or income.* Judge Vineyard still imposed the fines on both Mark Harrison and Harrison International and allowed Harrison to pay both over the five years of probation.
These fines and the 120 days of home confinement are a slap on the wrist in the continuum of criminal penalties available to the government; however, and sadly, even this minor sentence is more than what is commonly handed down in US wildlife cases.* While this reality must be changed (the laws strengthened, penalties increased, and judges and prosecutors informed) the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society salutes the judge, prosecutor, and investigators in this case for the outcome.* Harrison International is defunct and Mark Harrison is in financial ruin.* If only we could see all aspects of the shark fin trade criminalized in the United States and throughout the world and all those involved in the horrific trade be brought to ruin.* Contact your elected officials and encourage them to outlaw the shark fin trade.
The man is a WEEC! World Extinction Event Criminal. Killing sharks at their current rate of demise is a direct cause of the Elasmobranchii-cetacea Extinction Event, as sharks and cetaceans control the fish and crustaceans which in turn consume phytoplankton and algae. The oceans produce over 70% of our O2, and absorb over 80% of CO2 gas. As shark numbers fall their prey species thrive and consume our lifeline. This also causes not only a loss of breathable atmosphere, but the greenhouse affect, heating our planet even more. Under the polar seas are vast tracts of methane hydrate which reverts to methane gas with a 2-3 degree temperature increase. That much methane gas escaping into the atmosphere will strip our planet of it's UV protective Ozone layer. This means the death of all terrestrial plants in a few weeks and then all terrestrial animal life as well. Thus humans will also be wiped out! Making this idiot on of the many people contributing to the potential death of 7 billion humans! The death sentence hardly seems enough for a man who makes Hitlers war crimes look miniscule numerically speaking!

You do not know the severity of the crime you have committed and so you think that you have done little wrong other than legal violations of the very weak laws regarding sharks and other elasmobranchs! You have gotten off lucky! If it had been another 3-4 years when the WEECs act gets passed into law you would be facing execution in Death Row!
You are fortunate to live in an age when the punishment does not always fit the crime. In the Viking age you would have had your limbs hacked off with an axe and a hot iron splathe would have been used to cauterize them to keep you from bleeding to death. Then you would have been placed in a cart for all to view! They called this Heimnar, the living death!
Today in a more civilized age we do not punish crimes in this manner, but that does not mean a rope or a bullet would not suite you! In a few years time your punishment would be very different, likely a death sentence. So count yourself lucky that you were convicted this year.
But your name will be on my list and I will always let folks know what an murderer and monster you are! I hope that you know when the WEECs act is passed that public opinion might turn you into a hated fugative yet! I wish you the full weight of future law you hateful child killer. First waves of opposition pound
Japan's Taiji! Location of "The Cove"
In the wake of the controversial and highly acclaimed movie “The Cove,” the first wave of opposition has arrived in Taiji, Japan on the opening day of the dolphin slaughter season.
Ric O’Barry, the star of “The Cove,” successfully made it into Japan and to Taiji along with other Save Japan Dolphins staff and news crews from the U.S., Germany, and the U.K., and for the first time ever – three Japanese television crews.
The dirty little secret in the cove near Taiji is now an international scandal. The Australian sister city of Taiji, the Shire of Broome in Western Australia, recently suspended it’s sister city status until the killing of thousands of dolphins is ended.
The police were waiting for Ric O’Barry and his crew when they arrived, and initially it was a tense scene but Ric made it very clear that the purpose of the visit was educational and that no laws would be broken. The police acted professionally but kept a close watch on the crew and the journalists.
No dolphins were rounded up by the fishermen. It is hoped that the presence of crew and the cameras will keep the fishermen from their annual killing spree.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society plans to send in a second wave of opposition later this fall to continue defending the dolphins.

September 1, 2009: A Good Day for Dolphins

Today is September 1st, the first day of the dolphin slaughter season in Japan. But when I arrived today by bus from Kansai Airport with media representatives from all over the world, the notorious Cove from the movie was empty. There were no dolphin killers in sight. So today is a very good day for dolphins!
I vowed to be back in Taiji when the dolphin killing began. I've often been here alone, or accompanied by a few environmentalists. Sometimes, I was able to talk a major media organization into sending someone.
But the people of Japan never learned about the dolphin slaughter, because none of the media in Japan (with the exception of the excellent Japan Times) have ever sent reporters to the killing Cove. Until today!
When I got off the bus at the Cove this afternoon, I was accompanied by my son Lincoln O'Barry's film crew, a crew from Associated Press, Der Spiegel (the largest magazine in Germany), and the London Independent.
No dolphins and no dolphin killers. We would not have had a story at all, except for the police who were there, waiting all day for us to appear. Nine policemen came to talk to us.
Now, I have said this repeatedly: Unlike the Cove fishermen, the police from this Prefecture have always acted professionally, courteously, and fairly. I have never been mistreated or threatened by the police here. I think they are a microcosm of the people of Japan - the very people I am trying to reach about the dolphins!
And as I was talking with the police, as the international journalists stood around listening, suddenly a camera crew arrived from Japan! And then another! And then still another!
You have to understand that this is SO IMPORTANT. These TV stations have REFUSED to cover the story in Taiji for years and years. NOW, for the first time, they have shown up, with cameras rolling. The head policeman talking with me even said, for the cameras, that the police are not there to support the dolphin killing fishermen. We shook hands, and they left.
As I said, it is a good day for the dolphins. And for me personally, as the police only wanted to talk with me, not arrest me!
"The Cove" movie led to the strong action by the city of Broome, Australia, in suspending the sister-city relationship with Taiji. So now, the Japanese media are sitting up and listening, for the first time.
And I'm telling them: "This tour is to show journalists the GOOD things about Taiji." You see, with "The Cove" movie out now, we don't have to show the BAD things about Taiji. Soon, the whole world will know about the Taiji dolphin slaughter. And all Japanese will soon know about the cover-up that has occurred by the government in refusing to stop mercury-contaminated dolphin meat from being sold to unsuspecting Japanese consumers and children.
But Taiji can change this image of shame, if they want to. I will be telling them that the town of Nantucket used to be the capitol of the whale killing industry in the US. Now, it uses its history of whaling combined with whale-watching to market tourism very successfully. Whales and dolphins are worth more dead than alive. Taiji can do this, too. But the killing has to stop.
Yes, today was a good day for dolphins. Tomorrow, I will take journalists with me around town to show them Taiji. Tomorrow, too, I predict will be a good day for dolphins. Every day that we are here and the fishermen KNOW we are here, will likely mean no boats going out to round up dolphins for the killing Cove.
And because of "The Cove" movie, the dolphin killers must now fear hidden cameras and microphones, even when they THINK we are not here.
And soon the world spotlight from "The Cove" will shine a very bright light on Taiji

Mercury Danger in Dolphin Meat

SAPPORO — The annual dolphin hunt in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, as documented in the film "The Cove" has sparked an emotional international debate, with animal rights activists decrying the capture and slaughter as unnecessary and cruel, and those in Japan who defend the slaughter as both legally permissible under international treaties and an ancient tradition.
But for Tetsuya Endo, a professor at the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido, there is a far more important issue related to the hunt that the public and the government must address.Dolphin and whale meat is high in mercury, and Endo, one of the world's foremost authorities on mercury levels in dolphins and whales caught off Japan's coastal waters, has discovered Taiji residents who eat the meat sold in local stores have extremely high concentrations in their bodies.
"Between December 2007 and July 2008, myself and a team of scientists and researchers took hair samples from 30 male and 20 female residents of the Taiji area. In three cases, the levels of mercury present were more than 50 parts per million, high enough that it was possible nerve damage, like that seen in victims of Minamata disease, could occur," Endo told The Japan Times in an interview last week.
Endo's tests revealed that one Taiji man in his 50s had a mercury level of 67.2 parts per million. The average mercury level of all 50 subjects was 21.6 ppm for the men and 11.9 ppm for the women The average level of mercury present in Japanese people as a whole is only 2.55 ppm for men and 1.43 ppm for women, which means Taiji residents had mercury levels about 10 times the national average. Meat from pilot whales is quite common in Taiji area stores, and hair samples taken from people who said they ate pilot whale meat more than once a month had an average mercury level of 25.6 ppm, while those who ate the meat once every few months had an average level of 15.5 ppm.
"We discovered that people weren't eating whale meat every day. At most, they were eating it a few times a month. The problem is that although the frequency of eating the meat was low, the levels of mercury in the meat were surprisingly high," Endo said.Three of the subjects agreed to stop eating whale meat after learning their mercury levels were high.
By the time Endo's study was concluded in July 2008, their levels of mercury had dropped considerably.The revelation that Taiji residents who ate whale and dolphin meat had high levels of mercury was not a surprise to Endo, as previous testing showed that the meat had far higher levels than the government standard for fish in general.
Between 2002 and 2006, Endo led a team that purchased 60 different samples of whale and dolphin meat in Taiji and neighboring Nachikatsuura."The tests showed that the average levels of mercury and methyl mercury in the pilot whale meat bought in Taiji were 9.6 ppm and 5.9 ppm, respectively. Given that Japan's standards are 0.4 ppm and 0.3 ppm, respectively, these are extremely high levels," Endo said. The standards are based on what is known as the provisional tolerable weekly intake of mercury. Prior to 2003, the international standard was 3.3 micrograms per kg of body weight per week. Based on these numbers, the government established provisional levels of total mercury in fish and shellfish at 0.4 ppm and methyl mercury at 0.3 ppm.
But taking into account the possible effects on pregnant women and children, the World Health Organization revised the 3.3 figure downward to 1.6 micrograms per kg of body weight per week in 2003. Japan, however, adopted a standard of 2.0 micrograms per kg of body weight per week, saying that as a fish-eating culture it is only natural its standard be slightly higher.The tests on the 50 residents as well as the whale and dolphin meat findings have been made available to Wakayama Prefecture, which is now carrying out further tests. But although Taiji is now the center of international attention, Endo's studies on whale and dolphin meat showed that it was Okinawa, not Taiji, where the highest levels of mercury were found.
"In 2001, meat from a false killer whale that was being sold in Nago had 81 ppm of total mercury (mercury plus methyl mercury) present," Endo said.
Asked why the government doesn't do more to warn consumers of the possible dangers of eating whale and dolphin meat, such as putting warning labels on all meat sold, Endo says it's likely that officials simply don't see a problem. "The official attitude is probably along the lines of because so few people eat dolphin and whale meat, and since they tend to be mostly older, it's not that big of an issue," he said.

This is an excellent avian rescue and rehab center. Save our Sea Birds has taken over the facility that once housed Pelican Man Bird Rescue and Rehab. They have been there for a year and can use the support of visitors and locals alike. If you get a chance to visit the center you will see birds of prey, cormorants, pelicans, sandhill cranes, ibis, seagulls, ducks, coots, herons, and more. The staff are friendly and informative and a majority of the birds rehabbed at the center are rereleased back into the wild. For the moment admission is free and it is well worth a look! Save Our Seabirds is located in Ken Thompson Parkway in Sarasota Florida. They are right next to Mote Marine Aquarium. They operate with the help of donations from the public, so please do visit and support their wonderful work!
Note; when handling pelicans that have been hooked or entangled hold the bill and allow one finger to be bitten as you hold it. This does not hurt you or the bird but will keep a gap open so that the pelican can breath while you free it of the line or hook!
