Profile #1. The Oceanic White Tip Shark
Status:

Like most pelagic sharks the Oceanic Whitetip roams vast tracts of open ocean and is an oportunistic feeder. Long periods between meals has caused this shark to be very non-fussy and bold when selecting potential food items.
They follow tuna schools as well as squid and various other prey and predatory fish species. In the case of dolphins and cetaceans they are quick to take advantage of any scraps left over. In general they are a slow moving shark that is capable of tremendous bursts of speed, but spends a great deal of time conserving energy for when it does encounter prey.
This is also the species most often following ships in hopes of any sort of food items. They commonly compete with Silky sharks and sometimes Bronze whalers for food. In the early days of whaling they are the species responsible for more losses of flesh from whale carcasses dragged alongside the whaling ships. They are also responsible for the greatest number of humans having been consumed as during wartime they often encountered sinking ships and survivors adrift.
This is due to the fact that they roam so far across vast tracts of ocean that they are the most likely to find any shipwreck survivors.
They are powerful robust sharks with oversized fins bearing distinctive white edging and conspicuously rounded. They tend to hunt and travel most often in the top 150 feet of the oceans upper layers. Theri maximum length is around 13 feet.
As a rule they are solitary and unlike other shark species do not segregate into size or gender groups when they do encounter each other. They do gather when large food sources are present and prove to be extremely competative for food!
Like many pelagic species Oceanic Whitetips are a prime target and a frequent vicitm of longline fishing. The same for Blues, Makos, & Silkys.

Broome's sister city relationship with the Japanese port of Taiji has been restored, after a unanimous vote by Broome Shire councillors. Broome temporarily suspended the town's ties two months ago, out of protest at Taiji's annual dolphin cull. The move provoked a community backlash, with many locals feeling the town's multicultural heritage and historic ties with Japan had been betrayed.The five councillors present at last night's meeting agreed to restore formal ties, and apologise to Taiji for the hurt caused - the vote drew applause from the 70-strong public gallery.
Resident Eunice Yu says there was a sense of relief amongst Broome's Japanese community. "Absolutely ecstatic really - it is an emotional thing I think, because it's something that we value greatly in our community. So yes, very happy," she said. The council also passed a motion to change the project brief for Broome's planned new performing arts centre. The shire will now consider building an outdoor venue on Male Oval, in the Chinatown area, as one of its options.

Facts and Sounds of Whales.
Whales, porpoises and dolphins belong collectively to a group of animals called Cetaceans.
Dolphins were traditionally considered to be good luck signs for sailors. In almost every navy in the world, the badge for qualification for submarine sailors is 2 stylized dolphins facing the tower of a surfacing submarine.
Whales are divided into two major groups. The "Toothed" whales, and the "Baleen" whales. They are distinguished by their teeth.
The teeth of Baleen whales are what is called baleen, and look like long fibers or hairs. These whales filter feed on small fish and krill and other tiny crustaceans. While the toothed whales hunt for larger prey. Sperm whales for example eat squid while orcas eat everything from fish to other larger whales!
Whales are mammals. They give birth to live young which they produce milk for. They are warm blooded and do have very sparce and fine hairs. Whales evolved from ancient terrestrial animals that looked a bit like enlongated rats or shrews.
The evolution of cetaceans is fascinating!
Whales and sharks are the two apex predatory groups that have shaped the elvolution of almost every fish and marine organism in the oceans today. Their history paints a clearer picture of what has transpired on our world before man came along.
Sadly we have had a very devatating and negative impact on all cetaceans and sharks! From hunting and fishing practices to our pollution practices! Man is deadly to the oceans!

AND WHAT DID GREEDPEACE DO WITH THE MONEY THAT THEY RAISED? MILLIONS OF DOLLARS? THE BOUGHT A SLOW MOVING, ECO-FRIENDLY, EASY TO SPOT MONSTROSITY OF A SHIP AND NAMED IT RAINBOW WARRIOR 3.

Funding Cuts Could End 'Research' Whaling

TOKYO, Japan, November 12, 2009 (ENS) - A review of Japanese government spending now underway could put an end to Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, according to Greenpeace, a weak environmental group that has campaigned ineffectively against Japanese whaling for years. The spending review committee established by Japan's new Prime Minister, Yukio Hatoyama, has recommended that funding for the Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation be cancelled after 2010.
The OFCF is the largest financer of the Tokyo-based Institute of Cetacean Research, which runs the Japanese whaling program. The whaling fleet usually sails for the Southern Ocean in mid-November, hunting whales for scientific research regardless of a moratorium on commercial whaling set by the International Whaling Commission in 1986. But the research program does not cover its costs, and Japan's new government is looking for ways to cut spending.
The spending review committee has recommended that the Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Fund have all of its funding revoked, except monies needed for loans in 2010. The OFCF claims it needs 70.4 billion yen (US$780 million) for various programs, most likely including whaling, in 2010. The spending review committee and Cabinet Office will have the final decision on whether or not the proposed whaling operations for 2010 are necessary or should also be cut If the loans for whaling are revoked, it is unlikely the Institute of Cetacean Research can continue to operate. Reports in the Japanese media claim that the Institute has failed to fully repay more than one billion yen in previous OFCF loans.
The news comes on the eve of President Barack Obama's arrival in Tokyo for meetings with Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Friday evening. Whaling is on the agenda for discussions between the two leaders. "Prime Minister Hatoyama has a unique opportunity to signal he is serious about his election promises to clean up government spending by ending this controversial, corrupt and wasteful whaling program," said Greenpeace Australia Pacific Head of Campaigns Stephen Campbell. "We urge President Barack Obama to support Prime Minister Hatoyama to fully implement the recommendations of this committee and take the steps required to end whaling in the Southern Ocean," Campbell said.
The United States is opposed to commercial whaling and lethal scientific research whaling, as expressed in a statement by the U.S. State Department, which says, "The United States is committed to advancing the global conservation and management of large whale populations through science-based policies and leadership in the International Whaling Commission (IWC). "The United States continues to view the commercial whaling moratorium as a necessary conservation measure and believes that lethal scientific whaling is unnecessary in modern whale conservation management," the State Department says.
Meanwhile, 40 environmental nongovernmental organizations that work in Latin America have requested that their governments take diplomatic actions against the killing of whales "under supposed scientific purposes" to save the lives of hundreds of whales in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, the petition was presented jointly to all Latin American commissioners of the International Whaling Commission.
Elsa Cabrera, executive director of the Cetacean Conservation Center of Chile, said, "The vast support of the Latin-American NGOs is a strong message to our governments about the need to publicly reject the so-called 'scientific whaling' operations, an activity that is not regulated and that it is conducted without any mechanisms of control in waters that paradoxically are a whale sanctuary."
In the letter the NGOs affirmed, "Since the implementation of the moratorium on commercial whaling, the government of Japan has captured more than 8,000 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary under supposed scientific purposes and that since the beginning of the second phase of Japan's Whale Research Program in the Antarctic (JARPA II) in 2006, the annual quota of Antarctic minke whales has reached similar levels of the commercial whaling quota used for this species before the adoption of the moratorium."
Roxana Schteinbarg, executive coordinator of the Whale Conservation Institute of Argentina declared, "We are confident that our governments will pay attention to our concerns and begin actions that can stop the Japanese whaling fleet."
The Japanese government issues research whaling permits to the Institute of Cetacean Research which, in turn, contracts a single whaling company, Kyodo Senpaku, to provide the vessels and crew. The ICR releases the products from the hunts twice a year to Kyodo Senpaku to sell at a price fixed by the ICR and Ministry of Fisheries to wholesalers, processors and local authorities. The primary purpose of the sale is to cover the costs of whaling and research, according to a June 2009 report by the conservation groups WWF and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. However, even though ICR sets whale meat prices high relative to demand, they are not high enough to cover all costs, the report states. High subsidies are required to maintain Japan's "scientific whaling" operations, and these subsidies have increased in recent years as the hunts have expanded.
Then there is the cost of buying the votes of other countries to support the Japanese position at the meetings of the International Whaling Commission. The spending review committee will review funding of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Grant Aid program during the week of November 24, Greenpeace says.
The Japanese Whale Research Program under Special Permit in the Antarctic, JARPA, has been conducting lethal minke whale research since 1987. During the 2008-2009 whale hunt in Antarctica's Southern Ocean, Japan reports killing 679 whales. Under the whole Japanese whaling program, which includes whaling in the North Pacific as well as in Antarctica, 1004 whales were killed last year.
Since 1986, when the IWC ban on commercial whaling took effect, Japan has killed more than 12,000 whales. Its two separate hunts have increased in scope and scale to include common minke, Antarctic minke, fin, sperm, Bryde's and sei whales. Fin, sperm and sei whales are classed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The Institute of Cetacean Research says, "Japan's objective is to resume commercial whaling for abundant species on a sustainable basis under international control. At the same time we are committed to conservation and the protection of endangered species. This is the purpose of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, ICRW."
"Research whaling is a fundamental right of every member of the IWC according to Article VIII of the ICRW," the Institute states.
While the Southern Ocean was declared whale sanctuary by the IWC in 1994, the Institute does not respect that designation, saying, "The IWC sanctuary in the Antarctic applies to commercial whaling only. It does not apply to research whaling." The Japanese say they need to continue lethal scientific studies of whales because they believe whales are eating fish that Japanese consumers need for themselves. Amazing since their official recent press release ( their large discovery after all of their lethal scientific research ) indicated that "Whales eat Krill!" This placed Japan firmly at the head of the scientific community as the "Laughing stock" of any science community on the planet!
"The catches by Japanese fisheries drastically decreased from 12.8 million tons in 1988 to 5.8 million tons in 2005," states a 2009 paper on Japanese Whale Research Program in the North Pacific by scientists from the Institute of Cetacean Research, the National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries, and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.
The facts that Japan omits in it's reports are that the "missing/depleted" fish stocks stem from Japans policy of over harvesting the oceans on a level that outstrips every other nation on the planet! Japan fishes for far more fish than it can consume. For profit and to make other products such as pet food and fertilizer! Fish make up a great portion of what is fed to pigs and chickens as well as domestic house cats!
This report is a proud victory for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society who have long fought the Japanese whalers, and after Greenpeaces recent shameful refusal to protect whales and other marine life, left this brave organization as the sole presence on the southern oceans in the fight to protect whales. While the corrupt heads of Greenpeace wasted money slated for whale protection buying an eco-friendly oversized yacht, organizations like Oceana, Sea Shepherds, IKAN, HSI, and the EIA among others fought hard to bring down the illegal whale poachers of Kyodo Senpaku Kaishi LTD. At last the book is closing on thise chapter of whaling and thanks in greatest part to the expenses set upon the Japanese whalers by the direct intervention of Sea Shepherds in their many confrontations and interventions to stop this activity.
Greenpeace may be tooting their own horn loudly and claiming a strong responsibilty for what Sea Shepherds and so many others have actually accomplished! Do not be fooled by a good lie! For in the end, no matter how convincing it is, a lie is still just a lie!

So much that once seemed inexhaustible has already been worn away by our needs, our numbers, and, too often, our shortsighted greed. We've reached the place now where our hunger for more of everything has pushed the world's natural resources to the breaking point.
All but 10 percent of the large fish in the seas have been plundered; fully a quarter of the planet's fertile soils have been degraded by overuse and misuse; and the atmosphere has filled with greenhouse gases even faster than expected just a few short years ago. As human population has quadrupled during the past century, the world economy has increased 14-fold, industrial output 40-fold, and the area of irrigated land five-fold.
The past few decades have seen some of the most astounding increases in industry, trade, and overall wealth in history. The benefits of economic growth and global commerce have been enormous—more than 300 million Chinese have been lifted out of poverty. But the costs have been dramatic, too, in part because economic shock waves travel with such speed through our interconnected systems of finance, production, and exchange.
Our industrial, globalized world has been built out of a vast array of minerals, metals, and ores, and powered by vast reserves of fossil fuels. Once these are gone, we'll have to do without, find replacements, or scramble ever harder after less accessible or lower quality deposits. Take petroleum, as just one example. Initially valued for the remarkable ease with which it could be drawn from the punctured earth, most ready supplies of the fuel have already been tapped. That has pushed prices up, as well as driving production farther offshore and into more remote regions.
So many of these problems are connected, of course—the environment, population, food, access to fresh water, and the raw materials of commerce—and not just in the obvious ways. Certainly, fossil fuels and burning forests have driven climate change, and increased industrialization has spurred global warming as well as local and global pollution.
But increased wealth has also spurred people's appetites, boosting the demand for luxury foods such as seafood and beef, and leading to oceans emptied of fish and rain forests cleared not only for cattle but also for soybeans and oil palms planted to make biodiesel to replace climate-changing fossil fuels. And of course it was petroleum, in the form of diesel-powered fishing vessels, that extended the reach of our nets and lines to every corner of the oceans.
With even modest economic growth, we'll not only have more people but also more people wanting more and better food, more travel and tourism, more basic goods and luxuries and just plain stuff. And that means more mines and oil wells, more livestock raised and fertilizer- and water-hungry grains grown to feed them, and more cars and factories and airplanes to fill the air with heat-trapping gasses. It means mountains of waste of every description.
The decades ahead will present many challenges to humanity. We'll need to find new sources of energy to power our lives without choking our air. We'll need to learn to recycle and reuse on a scale not yet imagined, and to balance the convenience of consumption with the wisdom of conservation. Perhaps most importantly, we'll need to develop ways of doing much, much more with our planet's limited supply of fresh water. We'll need to do all of this with a changing climate and a growing population—and with the one very limited planet we've had all along.

A report from Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
After our helicopter landed the Shonan Maru #2 sped up right onto our stern with water cannons blazing in an attempt to destroy our helicopter on the landing pad. This was happening as the helicopter crew were removing the blades to bring the helicopter back into the hangar.
I responded by ordering the deployment of a 150 meter line aft to force the Shonan Maru #2 to keep it's distance.
We had to increase speed to avoid the water cannons and this led to a very dangerous situation with the two ships moving around large chunks of ice. We saw the Shonan Maru #2 take a big hit but we can't confirm any damage.
We are undamaged.
We have reported the attack to the French authourities. They are taking this seriously I believe. The Japanese mounted an unprovoked attack on our helicopter twice in French territory, first with an LRAD device and then with water cannons with the intent to inflict material damage to our aircraft.
We are now 140 miles north of the French Research base of Dumont d'Urville.
The Japanese have not been given permission to be in French waters. Sea Shepherd has been given official permission to be in these waters.

Whalers Pose as New Zealand Government Agents to Track Sea Shepherd
The Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin left Hobart, Tasmania at 1800 Hours on December 31st to return to the search in the Southern Ocean for the illegal operations of the Japanese whaling fleet. The Steve Irwin had lost the tail of the Shonan Maru #2 when the Sea Shepherd crew returned to Tasmania and the Japanese were anxious to put that tail back on the anti-whaling ship knowing that a continued tracking of the Steve Irwin would keep the conservationists away from the whaling fleet.
The Japanese were desperate to not lose track of the Steve Irwin, so desperate that they appear to have fraudulently poised as New Zealand government agents in their efforts to find the Steve Irwin at sea.
On January 1st, two men, Glenn Inwood and Chris Johnston from Omeka Communications located in Wellington, New Zealand chartered a Chieftain aircraft out of Melbourne. They identified themselves as acting on behalf of the government of New Zealand to track down and locate a New Zealand catamaran and the Steve Irwin on the pretext that if they (the Sea Shepherd ships) were to get in trouble it would cost the New Zealand government a great deal of money to rescue. They wanted the ships located and an estimate given of their track and speed.
The Chieftain aircraft undertook two four hour searches. The searches failed to find the Steve Irwin. The Ady Gil, the Sea Shepherd catamaran was fourteen hundred miles south so finding it was out of the question. It was the Steve Irwin they were looking for.
The two searches failed to find the Steve Irwin so Inwood and Johnston chartered a second Chieftain for another 4 hour flight. It also failed to spot the Steve Irwin.
Sitting at the 200 mile limit the Japanese harpoon vessel Yusshin Maru waited for word from the spotter planes to resume the tail on the Steve Irwin. It had been spotted and identified by a boat out of Hobart with a six person crew identifying themselves as the Taz Patrol.
Meanwhile the Steve Irwin had latched onto a passing storm and rode the winds and heavy rains across the Economic Exclusion Zone into International waters undetected.
The 12 hours of flight with the Chieftains at $1,610 and hour cost Glenn Inwood $18,320. He put it on his personal credit card.
Was Glenn Inwood a representative of the New Zealand government as he said?
No, Mr. Inwood owns Omeka Communications, the New Zealand public relations firm that represent the Japanese whaling industry.
It will be interesting to see if the New Zealand government has a problem with a Japanese hired public relations firm representing themselves as New Zealand government agents. The end result was that the search was unsuccessful, the Steve Irwin is running south without a Japanese tail, the Yushin Maru is not whaling and the whaling industry is out another $18 thousand dollars.

Glenn Inwood has always been a rather gutless wonder, attempting to spin a good light on a very unpopular subject. Unpopular with not just New Zealanders and Australians, but also unpopular with the world at large.
His repeated support of criminal organizations tied to the Yakusa and other crime syndicates back in Japan has lead to strong tensions back home. Inwood claims to be Maori, something which the Maori deny with a fervent disgust. "If our blood is in him at all, it must be thin indeed!" Said a Maori representative. But Inwood had been botching the job that the whalers paid him to do.
Did I say botching? Try screwing up big time! If anything his contradictions and double talk along with being caught in many outright lies has made him a liability. It is possible that this extremely illegal stunt was set up as a punishment for failing the whalers? With a potential prison sentence looming if New Zealand wishes to prosecute, Inwood is set to take a fall!

The Time is Right for Bob Barker to Rescue the Whales
Bob Barker Donates $5,000,000 to Sea Shepherd for Ocean Conservation
Bob BarkerAnother anti-whaling ship arrived in the Southern Ocean today, unexpected and right on time: the Bob Barker.
The 1,200-ton Norwegian built Antarctic harpoon vessel caught up with the Japanese whaling fleet at 0300 Hours on Wednesday, January 6th, in the area of Commonwealth Bay off the Adelie Coast at 143 Degrees 17 Minutes East and 66 Degrees 43 Minutes South. The Norwegian flag cracked in the chill Antarctic air as the silhouette of the whaler gave every indication that the ship was sent to support the Japanese whalers.
The Japanese could be forgiven for thinking that the pro-whaling Norwegians had sent a ship to support their illegal whaling activities in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. But any excitement turned to disappointment quickly as the Norwegian flag was hauled down and the black and white skull with crossed Trident and Shepherd’s crook was raised to announce the arrival of the Bob Barker, the latest ship acquired for the Sea Shepherd ocean defense fleet.
Thanks to a $5,000,000 contribution from American television personality and icon Bob Barker, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was able to quietly purchase and refit the former Norwegian whaler in Africa. The ice strengthened fast chaser boat quietly departed from Mauritius on December 18th to join up with the Sea Shepherd ships Steve Irwin and Ady Gil in the Southern Ocean.
Barker has also funded the cost of a helicopter that will accompany the society’s ships. The aircraft is named The Nancy Burnet after the president of United Activists for Animal Rights, an organization Barker also supports. This new helicopter will participate in future campaigns.
“I’m delighted to be able to help the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in its mission to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans,” said Barker. “There is lot of talk about preserving our ecosystems and species, but this is one organization that puts these words into action.”
For the first time ever, Sea Shepherd has three ships on the Japanese fleet and each ship gives the campaign unique abilities. The long range fast ice class Bob Barker will take the lead in harassing the Japanese fleet and will be able to stay on station for three solid months without refueling. The Steve Irwin will be carrying the campaign helicopter and will coordinate all flight activities in addition to blocking loading operations on the Nisshin Maru, the factory ship. The Ady Gil, with twice the speed of the Japanese harpoon vessels, will concentrate on intercepting the fast chaser vessels to block their hunting activities.
The objective of the Sea Shepherd fleet is to sink the Japanese whaling fleet economically – to bankrupt the whaling industry by cutting whale kill quotas in half and costing the whaling fleet their annual profits. This year’s campaign has been named Operation Waltzing Matilda to reflect the Sea Shepherd’s gratitude to the people of Australia for their incredible support since 2005 for our activities.
Thanks to the generous support of Bob Barker, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been given the means to seriously impact the profits of the whaling industry this season. Now more than ever, we are confident that we will be able to drive the outlaw whalers from the waters of the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary.
The Japanese whalers are discovering that the price is no longer right. With Sea Shepherd cutting their kill quotas in half and cancelling their profits for a fourth year in a row, the heavily subsidized whaling industry is on the ropes financially.

Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd's stealth boat Ady Gil has been cut in half by a Japanese security vessel in the Antarctic today, the group's leader Paul Watson said. The $1.5 million high-tech vessel's remains were sinking, but its six-man crew had been rescued and was uninjured, Captain Watson told The Age online. Captain Watson said the Ady Gil was idling in waters near Commonwealth Bay when it was suddenly approached and rammed by the Japanese ship Shonan Maru, which has been detailed to provide security to the fleet.
Earlier today, the fleet was contacted for the first time by the Ady Gil and Sea Shepherd's surprise third vessel, the Bob Barker. Captain Watson, aboard the Steve Irwin, said he was still 500 miles from the scene. "This seriously escalates the whole situation," Captain Watson said of the collision.
"According to the Institute of Cetacean Research, the Ady Gil's crew were launching projectiles at the Nisshin Maru and attempted to entangle its propellers with rope." Looking more like Batman's spacecraft than a boat, the biodiesel-powered trimaran Ady Gil arrived at the Southern Ocean stand-off between Japanese whalers and activists yesterday. It was reported this morning to be about 50 nautical miles away from the whaling fleet.
Japan's Fisheries Minister Hirotaka Akamatsu had earlier warned two security ships would be used to protect the whaling fleet, intervening when Sea Shepherd tried to block the transfer of harpooned whales to the factory ship Nisshin Maru. Captain Watson this morning announced the existence of a secret third ship in the Sea Shepherd flotilla. He said he was confident that with three ships, Sea Shepherd would be able to cause maximum disruption to the whaling, which has been underway for around a month.
The Rudd Government has repeatedly called for caution by both sides in the wilds of the Antarctic. "We have reminded the masters of protest vessels of their obligations under international law to take all steps to ensure safety of life at sea, particularly in the inhospitable conditions of the Southern Ocean," Environment Minister Peter Garrett said recently. "We are also passing the same message to the government of Japan."

UPDATE 4.40pm: JAPANESE whalers have collided with one of the Sea Shepherd's protest vessels in the Southern Ocean, ripping a gaping hole in the front.
The lightweight 24-metre (79-foot) Ady Gil was shadowing the Shonan Maru 2 when protesters claim the Japanese ship suddenly started its engines and hit the Sea Shepherd vessel.Sea Shepherd insists the Ady Gil was trying to get out of the way of the Japanese vessel, while the Japanese have accused the protesters of causing the collision Jeff Hansen, Australian director of the Sea Shepherd organisation, said the Ady Gil had come to a stop in front of the Shonan Maru 2 vessel. Mr Hansen said the Ady Gil, a small vessel built for speed, was trying to get out of the way when the incident happened at 3pm. "The Ady Gil has been cut, hit by one of the harpoon vessels,'' he said. "It was stationary at the time. It tried to back out of the way but the Shonan Maru 2 had it in its path and it cleaned it up."It's still floating at the moment, but chances are it will take on water and sink. Mr Hansen said the crew of six were uninjured. "Everyone aboard is safe, we've managed to get everyone off and they're ok."We have it all on film and we're getting onto all the authorities at the moment."
The 24m futuristic trimaran left Hobart on December 19 to tackle the Japanese whaling fleet in Antarctic waters. Before leaving, Captain Pete Behune said he was planning to take the fight right to the harpoon vessels. "We will be on the fleet the whole time. Once we engage them, every day we'll be looking to mess them over," Bethune said. "My first job is to get my boat down there and get my crew down there and back safely and look at the risk."
The Shonan Maru 2 was detailed to provide security to the rest of the Japanese whaling fleet. The Ady Gil is one of three Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessels battling Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean. Paul Watson, captain of Sea Shepherd flagship the Steve Irwin, said the $2 million Ady Gil is paralysed and probably unsalvagable. "It cut eight feet off the front of the vessel. There is a big gaping hole, so it can't go anywhere or it would fill up with water," he said. Five of the crew are now on Sea Shepherd's new ship Bob Barker, with one still on the wrecked Ady Gil.
Earlier today, Captain Watson accused the Japanese of chartering planes from Australia to pinpoint Sea Shepherd locations. "We didn't think anything of it at the time, we thought they were Australian government planes, routine,'' he said. "And then about six hours later the Shonan Maru was on our tail so we figured out that the planes had given the location so that the Japanese could tail us.''
He said the Steve Irwin only shook off the ship - after skirmishes involving a water cannon, a laser-type device and a military-style sonar weapon - when he returned to port and then left under low cloud cover, making air surveillance impossible. "I think they spent about 20,000 dollars on that search, about 12 hours in total, and they didn't find us and we were able to slip past,'' Captain Watson said. Earlier today, anti-whalers threw rancid butter-filled Christmas tree baubles "like baseballs'' at the Japanese ships to make their decks too foul to work. "They can't work on the deck with these stinkbombs and it makes life very unpleasant on board,'' Captain Watson said. "In East Africa they shoot elephant poachers, down here we just throw stinkbombs.''
Captain Watson said the Sea Shepherd activists latched on to the Japanese ships just before dawn, about a month after setting out from Australia on their annual bid to stop the slaughter of hundreds of minke and fin whales. Watson said earlier the Ady Gil and the Bob Barker were pursuing the whalers in Antarctica's Commonwealth Bay. The 1200-tonne Norwegian built Antarctic harpoon vessel Bob Barker arrived off Commonwealth Bay at 3am today with 30 crew aboard.
The ship was bought in Ghana with a $5 million donation by US television celebrity Bob Barker and sailed from Mauritius on December 18. It joined the MV Steve Irwin and the Ady Gil. "I'm surprised we kept it a secret as long as we did, considering how many people we had involved," Captain Watson said "It has the speed and it's ice strengthened and it's the perfect vessel to go after the whaling fleet. "We kept it quiet until this morning at 3 o'clock when they found the Japanese fleet. "The security vessels were so busy chasing up 500 miles north of the fleet that they had no idea the Bob Barker was moving in on them."
Sea Shepherd activists have harassed the Japanese fleet over the past six hunting seasons and claim to have saved the lives of hundreds of whales. An international moratorium on commercial whaling was imposed in 1986 but Japan kills hundreds each year using a loophole that allows "lethal research'' on the animals.
Japan makes no secret of the fact that whale meat ends up on dinner tables, and accuses Western nations of not respecting its culture.

Sea Shepherd sues for piracy - in Holland

The Sea Shepherd anti-whaling organisation is to sue the crew of Japanese whaling ship Shonan Maru 2 for piracy in the Dutch courts, lawyer Liesbeth Zegveld said on Friday
The Japanese ship was involved in the sinking of the €950,000 futuristic anti-whaling boat Ady Gil owned by Sea Shepherd on Wednesday. The Ady Gil was trying to stop the Shonan Maru hunting for whales 2,500 km south of Tasmania.
The lawyer says the decision to sue in the Netherlands is justified because one of the six-strong Ady Gil crew is Dutch and the organisation's fleet flag carrier, the ship Steve Irwin, is registered in the Netherlands.
'There is enough evidence,' she said. 'The collision has been recorded on film.'
