PORTFOLIO Page 2
If there were ever a folk who truely speak in silence about the beautiful places of the earth, then who better than the native peoples of the new world? I marvel and admire the different cultures of everyone that I have met. None more so than America's indiginous folk. The names and faces speak worlds to anyone who is willing to take a moment and see and listen.
These two woodburnings are two native indians taken from black and white photographs from historical archives. The one on the left of the page is Little Dog who was a Lakota Sioux. The original photo was circa 1908. The second man is Three Eagles who was Nez Perce and his photo was taken in 1912.
They are majestic and dignified and speak to me in a silent way that few pictures do. I often look at them and wonder about their day to day lives and the people and places that they encountered in their many years. They revered and respected nature and lived a path that is lost and alien to so many people. Like the Aboriginies, or Warani, or Masi, it is always sad to think of the richness of the world laid bare by those who are long passed from us and the world that they knew and revered.
The names always strike me and I find myself in admiration of the descriptives. "Kills in Timber" or "Fog in the Morning" or "Does Everything" "Coyote Speaker" "Mogu Wolf Child" or the contemptuous "Whiteman's Puppet". Names that tell a great deal about who these folks were and how they were seen and known by others.
What an amazing legacy and I can only hope that my art captures a small peice of their eternal spirit for all to know.

Above is pictured a small woodburning ( 6.5" X 6.5" ) of the Battlestar Galactica as redesigned for the new Sci-Fi channel TV series. One of my all time favorite shows ever, I am a die-hard fan and of course I had a lot of fun with this burn and all it's tiny details. Eventually I want to do a huge burn of the Galactica in combat with a Cylon Basestar.
To the right is a woodburning on a small plaque of Commander Adama as played by Edward James Olmos. He owns this plaque, and is of course a long time favorite actor in my book.
An instructional sign promoting classes that I used to teach in Pyrographic art a few years ago.
Wildlife art has always been a great passion of mine and of course wildlife and fantasy peices have comprised the mainstay of my artwork.
This peice is done on a 12" X 12" ashwood board and depicts a leopard on the rocks.
I have done many big cat pictures and the media does not matter so much whether pyrography, or airbrush, or colour pencil, they are always striking and beautiful creatures that really seem to tug at the heartstrings of the viewers.
Leopards are solitary animals and the one big cat in the old world who is currently holding steady with both numbers and geographic range. A large part of it's success is that it is a secretive animal and avoids contact with humans whenever it can.
As habitat loss and encroachment of mankind continues to threaten wildlife there is an ever increasing preassure on animals to survive. Conservation is very important to the well being of so many species of plants and animals that I like to share that message with all of my viewers.
The more we protect our world and the wild places of the earth, the better the chances are for all species for a continued tomorrow.
Support wildlife and the preservation of the species and lands that make our world such a beautiful place!
Pictured here are two male Frilled Dragons in combat. The Frill is a flap of skin that extends on either side of the neck and throat and the lizard can expand it's frill when need be to appear larger to any potential danger or rival.
When not in use the frill acually lays flat along the neck and sides of the animal, as seen in the clock below.
Speaking of Dragons, it's always fun to take some artistic license and play with the concept. This is an early woodburning on a small plaque. It was done during a demonstration a long time ago and was a fun little burn to do. I always enjoy visualizing what a dragon may look like.
When I envision a dragon I generally try to stay away from the whimsical versions. I say to myself, it nature were making this creature what would it look like?
The front limbs would most likely be modified into a pair of wings in a "bat-like" fashion meaning ground locomotion would be done in a knuckle crawl while the back legs would remain strong and well clawed like a raptor.
I figure that spikes of horns or frill for defensive display agains't rival males or for courting a female might be a standard thing with such a creature.
Additionally, at the size that dragons are most often thought of as ( large to giant reptilian creatures ) it would be quite possible that males especially sported striking patterns or colours, again for impressing a female since they are large enough that they would not need to fear predation from other animals.
Perhaps like many of the monitor lizards of other reptiles today the juvenile colours would be more camoflaged while colours would change or shift as they reached maturity.
